Food Review: Gyo-o 魚王

For some decently priced Japanese food in  Japanese decor, Gyo-o is the place to be. Awhile ago I had dinner at Gyo-o and when I walked in I really liked looking at all the funky decor on their walls. I couldn’t read any of it though.

I was facing this wall while I was eating. Are these food names or what?

Because it was a weekday and at around 6 pm, there weren’t many people eating yet and we were seated immediately. However, when it came to around 7pm, people were flooding and waiting for tables. The place is fairly small, so it fills up with customers quite quickly.

I ordered the Seafood Ramen ($10) with Tonkotsu base soup. I really liked this soup base, much better than miso! It was full of flavour but not too salty.  I liked the different kinds of seaweed, except for the red ones. The portion was huge so I didn’t end up finising it.  The ramen started getting soggy after 20 minutes, so eat this fast for fresh, hot ramen. I do wish they added an egg or something though.

My friend ordered the Seafood Salad Ramen. It was extremely colourful and as tasty as it looks.

Oh, I also saw a sign for macarons! Didn’t try any though!

The service was kind and quick- Gyo-o makes a good spot for a quick and affordable lunch or dinner. This is a place worth trying for food with authentic Japanese flair.

Food review: Sushi King – Giant Pieces of Sushi and Exploding flavour

My classmates and I were starving after class/ student council photoshoot so we went to Sushi King on Granville Street to nom on giant sushi pieces. Sushi, to me, is one of the best hungry stuffers. Bellingham, Washington Part 2: Ivar’s Seafood Bar

During my trip to Bellis Fair in Bellingham, Washington; my cousin and I had a small lunch meal to share at Ivar’s Seafood Bar located in the foodcourt. She heard that the clam chowder was really good, and luckily there was a combo – $11.99 for a three piece fish and chips + drink + clam chowder.

The fried fish was tasty and fresh, not sure what kind of fish it was- I think cod or sole? The fried were deliciously potato-y with the right amount of salt. The tartar sauce that came with it was delicious as well. We each share 1.5 pieces of fish and it was enough to satisfy us (since we pigged out on cinnamon centres at Cinnabon after.)

The clam chowder was chock full of flavour and clams! Not like Tim Hortons or what UBC serves with 5 clams and a bunch of potatoes and other cheap condiments. The clam chowder was hot, creamy, and very clammy! Warms you up on a hot day!

For all those living in Vancouver and driving down to Bellis Fair- be sure to give this a try! I realized that other malls- such as Richmond Centre, Pacific Centre,and Metrotown don’t have seafood bars in the food court! I wish they did! The only other delicious stand alone store I can think of is Pajo’s Fish n’ chips. We need more of these places!!
