I love going for a registered massage therapy session to loosen up the knots and muscle tightness in my body. I slowly spread my sessions out throughout the year and use my insurance to cover these massages, sparingly. Massages are generally pricey enough that I don’t do them very often, but I was just recently introduced to New Image College (NIC) Spa, located in Downtown Vancouver. Not only do they have massages for $20, but their spa services such as facials, pedicures, manicures, are also $20!!
NIC Spa is an addition to the New Image College, a post secondary institution offering training in the industry of aesthetics, makeup, film, and television. Their spa services (see the full list here,) are done by students and the concept is to open doors for those who can’t afford the luxury of a spa. Some amazing services that you can get for $20 include: Hydradermie Facial, back facial, AHA Peel, or an Arm & Hand scrub.
I booked a 30 minute back/shoulder/neck massage and a 30 minute reflexology. My massage therapist, Machiko, did an excellent job of making sure the right amount of pressure was applied during the massage and warned me of any pain. Personally, I LOVE feeling beaten up during a massage and I was all in when she wanted to apply more pressure to certain tight areas on the bottom of my feet and my shoulders.
Machiko’s technique was amazing; she told me she worked in Japan for 9(?) years and came to Canada to learn different techniques in the industry. She was very experienced to know what to do and is comparable to other RMTs or another massages I’ve had in Asia! I felt a bit sore after, but a lot more relaxed in my back/shoulder/neck area. For a $20 massage, this is a steal and I have no doubt that I will go back and see her again.
I’d definitely go back to try out their other services, especially for hair removal, facials, and more massages! I sit in the office 80% of the time and having a massage is just a freaking treat at the end of the week. Having an affordable massage is even better. Although the interior of NIC Spa is quite simple and they may not have state of the art technology, but it is a nice little getaway in downtown Vancouver. It is so nice to find an affordable luxury in the downtown Vancouver area. Next time, I may just fit a massage during my lunch break! 😉
