Ask me what kind of eyeliner I use and trust to the end of time, the answer is always liquid. Until now. I finally have options, and a plethora of colours to choose from. My dreams of doing Hogwarts’ house colour inspired eye makeup may finally come true!! The new Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencils are what my eye liner dreams are made of. 1000% better than the Artist Liners (reviewed previously on here.)
Make Up For Ever collaborated with Charli XCX ( BOOM CLAP!! – Fault in Our Stars anyone??) to create the Aqua XL Eye Pencils ($25 CAD.) The pencils were tested by professional make up artists in extreme conditions: under water, on stage, and behind camera. There are a total of 20 shades and five finishes for the eyeliners: matte, diamond, satin, iridescent, and metallic.
The XL stands for ‘ Extra Long’- these eye pencils give you XL performance; the ingredients contain flexible resin which makes the liner long lasting and vegetable wax for consistent colour payoff. There is also a dry oil to give water resistant properties. You also get XL colour; copolymer gels intensify and amplify the colour and brightness. Lastly, the pencils provide XL comfort with emollient oil and microspherical silica which makes the pencils creamy and smooth. The addition of mango butter prevents the skin from drying out as well.
I was super skeptical whether these eyeliners do provide such performance. From my experience, not even a 1000 protection charms coming from Hermione Granger could shield my eyelids from its tendency to ruin all pencil liners that sit on my skin. Make Up Forever has been proven me wrong; this liner lasted the whole day on me and for the life of a colourful line sitting on my face, that’s pretty much forever.
The only smudginess I really get is wearing them for 14+ hours long and the colour will slightly transfer on my hooded eyelid, this is miles better than any other pencil liner I’ve EVER tried. No raccoon eyes which blew my mind. It’s also scary because they are a bit TOO smudgeproof. My Garnier Micellar Water do not completely clean it up; I’ve been using coconut oil to thoroughly clean my eye makeup. The tip of the pencil liner does wear down pretty fast so I have to sharpen them after 3-4 uses; I wish the liners came with a sharpener on the tip or in the lid to make it even more convenient. Despite these flaws, I would whole heartedly spend $25 on one of these pencil liners, and I can’t say that for any other pencil liner I’ve tried.
The colours I received were:
- I-90: Iridescent Pop Purple
- ME-42: Metallic Bronze
- M-22: Matte Majorelle Blue
- M-26: Matte Pastel Blue
- I-24: Iridescent Blue with green sparkles (I chose this shade since it matches my iPhone case, my David’s Tea Timolino, my makeup bag..)
Every pencil has good colour payoff. Unfortunately, M-26 (Matte Pastel Blue) and M-22 (Matte Majorelle BLue) broke off the moment I swatched them on my arm – probably because I pressed too hard. Coincidentally, only the matte pencils broke when I swiped them on my arm. When I draw them on my eye, I am much more gentle and have not experienced any pencil breaking since.
The Aqua XL Eye Pencils gave the XL colour, comfort, and performance that I was expecting; and also gave me an XL makeup-gasm. I can’t stop recommending the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Liners; I am eagerly awaiting the next VIB sale to get more!
