The latest Tarte collection, Rainforest of the Sea, is owning right now. I purchased a mini travel skincare set ($12 CAD!!!!) during the VIB sale and I also received some makeup products to try out! The concept behind this collection is using their Rainforest of the Sea complex which is “a proprietary blend of algae and marine flower extracts that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while smoothing and softening skin.” Algae’s been on earth forever so I TRUST YOU TARTE, for incorporating some of earth’s oldest living organisms into the products.
I was going to put all the Rainforest of the Sea items in one post, but I feel like these lipsticks deserve it’s own spotlight. The Drench Lip Splash Lipstick ($26 CAD) is described as a full coverage matte lipstick and this a matte formula that I would use over and over again! First, it doesn’t dry your lips up like matte lipstick would.
- Sodium Hyaluronate Filling Spheres: Deliver and retain moisture for optimal hydration and smoother-looking lips.
- Jojoba Seed Oil: Natural soothing extract that leaves lips soft, supple, and smooth.
- Pomegranate Oil: Helps brighten lackluster skin and fight free radical damage.
- Cupuacu Butter: Rich in essential fatty acids and sterols that help firm while drenching lips in moisture.
- Murumuru Butter: Rich in essential fatty acids and ProVitamin A to help restore elasticity and soothe lips.

Not saying that the lipsticks are as hydrating as a lip balm, but I didn’t grab my lip balm until 1.5 hours later. I feel the butter working it’s magic when I applied it; very smooth and creamy. Secondly, the matte finish isn’t your typical 2D, no shine lipstick look. There is some sheen to it; it’s like how your butter on toast would reflect some light at certain angles.
It can get easily mushed in so no smushing it against my lips. Definitely don’t store it somewhere warm either, I can imagine it melting like my Fresh Sugar Lip Balms. If you carry a lot of things in your makeup bag, you might be relieved to know that the Lip Splash Lipsticks are probably one of the lightest lip products I have owned to date.
You would think there’s a lot of product in these long, lipstick tubes- but no. You get 0.085oz; the amount of lipstick you get is as much as the skinny portion of the tube. The bottom part is just holding plain air. Compare this to Bite’s $28 Lush Lip Tint- it holds 0.11oz of product!
The two shades out of twelve that I received are: Bonfire (a dark mauve shade,) and Happy (a deep rose shade.) Slightly wondering why Happy is called Happy; I’d think it would have a name related to something you’d do in the water or beach.

One swatch gives a punch of colour! When I swatched them, I used a bit of strength and you can see a chunk of the lipstick is in my swatch. Light hand, people!
Bonfire may look great on others, but not on me. I look like I’ve been asphyxiated. It’s also a bit patchy and you can see the colour is a bit uneven on my lips cause it grabs onto every dry bit. Happy, on the other hand, makes my happy. I haven’t tested out how long Bonfire stays on because I don’t have the balls to wear it out. (Braided my hair in the photo though after watching a Zoella video and she had dark lipstick on!) Happy transfers while sipping on a beverage, but didn’t completely fade until 3.5-4 hours later. Because it’s so creamy, I had to check the mirror to ensure it hasn’t feathered out of my lip line, the corners of the mouth are really tricky and were the first to go.

Based on the price and amount of lipstick you get, it makes me scratch my head a little (not literally, of course.) But Tarte did their formula right and it’s rare to find a matte lipstick that I would wear loud and proud (again, only Happy. Not Bonfire.) I have a few more products from the Rainforest of the Sea collection to be featured – keep an eye out!
UGH, guess what?!! A day after I pre-wrote this review, I wanted to wear Happy out; I opened the cap and the lipstick bullet flew out and and landed on my carpet. *insert huge sigh.* I’m not sure what happened, but if you do consider purchasing it, be very careful with the lipstick. This thing is weaker than my pinky.
