When I was at Dave Lackie’s Clarins Beauty dinner, I was looking at Jenn from A Beautiful Zen‘s lashes wondering what she was using to make it so fluttery and separated; it was some really awesome, natural looking lash extensions. Fast forward later, I found myself at Double Take Studio, at East 33rd and Main St in Vancouver for my first lash extension experience.
I met Denys of Double Take Studio where he welcomed me with a cup of wellness tea and went through the process with me. Double Take Studio is committed to make customers feel confident about themselves and lash extensions is one way to enhance your natural beauty. They use synthetic mink lashes and also partnered with DOMO Tea and other local tea companies to support local businesses. What I really love was that the owner test all products on himself; lash extensions as well as other beauty products. From a customer’s point of view, I can see that Double Take Studio have confidence in their products and know every nitty gritty detail behind them.
Denys gave me a consultation to determine what type of lash extensions I would get. I mentioned that my lifestyle was minimal makeup as I’m constantly in the office and sometimes going to construction sites, and I wear glasses so I was looking for something to make my eyes stand out in a non-dramatic way. I went for a Full Classic Look, (retails for $120, fills for $90) which is attaching 80 lashes per eye. Additionally I went for the “D-curl” and the extension of my lashes would be 30-50% longer.
There are various ‘curls’- starting with J for lashes that are mostly straight with a slight curve, or a C curl where the lashes arc lightly, and a D curl, where the lashes are more curled up. The potential drawback of the D curl is that the lashes would touch the eyelid, but Mandy, who applied my lash extensions, took note of that to ensure I would have a comfortable D curl. This process took 1.5 hours and I even had a nice nap!

I actually have long and thick lashes naturally, but they’re hardly noticed because my hooded eyelids kills all the fun. I’ve never had confidence in showing off my eyes. After the process, I can say that has changed.
Not only was the lash extension process relaxing, but the look of Double Take Studio was relaxing and comforting. I love the aesthetics of the room and reception; teal and white accents, plants, and wall decorations!

Before I left, Denys left me some notes on taking care of the lashes. I was to avoid getting them wet for the first 24 hours as the glue is still settling. Additionally, I shouldn’t use any oil based eye makeup remover (phew, good thing I don’t have any of that!) and to use cotton free wipes if possible to avoid having a piece of cotton stuck on my lashes. Say goodbye to gel liners and cream eyeshadows. Also, do not use mascara ( wouldn’t even dream of it after this transformation,) and do not curl the lashes. Double Take Studio does carry lash approved mascara though! If you have oily eyelids (which I do,) just be sure to clean it during midday. At work, I’ve been just blotting my eyelids during my break!
Luckily, the rules to follow were easy. I usually go out with a non waterproof liquid liner and some under eye concealer, lash extensions just enhanced my minimal eye makeup look even more! Denys also gave me a few mascara wands to brush my lashes; which I’ve been doing in the morning and night to keep them curly and pretty!

For the first few days I was SUPER careful but one day I was rubbing my eyes when I woke up and totally forgot about my extensions and ran to the washroom to check nothing fell out. All was well. This was my first lash extension and I was really pleased with the wonders it did! Except for being careful with washing my face and removing my eyeliner, they are weightless and my only validation of their existence is being a bit vain and pull out my mirror to flutter my lashes. Would I get lash extensions again? Yes, but probably not as an ongoing thing since it’ll be an expensive investment. But for any major events, I will be waving my fake Harry Potter wand and go “accio lash extensions budget!” Do you know how many selfies I’ve taken since last week?
Thank you to Double Take Studio for taking care of my lashes and giving myself a bit of confidence! The whole time I was there, they were extremely professional and really easy to talk to! This was my first lash experience and I can say it has convinced me that I will go for it again the future. You can visit Double Take Studio at:
