If was at Hogwarts, I’d probably be as good as Potions as Neville Longbottom, my fellow Gryffindor(yes, I was just sorted into Gryffindor in Pottermore.) Snape (RIP Alan Rickman) was a scary professor, let’s admit that. In the muggle world, the only potion I’ve been blending is my own custom Demeter Fragrance Library scent. As part of the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Network, I had the lucky opportunity to be scent sent a few unique fragrances to concoct my own fragrant potion.
If you haven’t heard of Demeter and love scents, your nose is in for a surprise. They have a ‘library’ of scents of almost anything- so what if you want to smell like flowers and food at the same time? IT CAN BE DONE! Demeter’s fragrances are blendable and layer-able so you can make a custom scent that no one else has. I received a foolproof blending base note trio of vanilla scents- Hawaiian Vanilla, Angel Food, and Gingerbread. A separate box contained a foolproof blending duo of Jasmine and Lavender. The duo kit also included an empty bottle, droppers, and funnel so I can science my own fragrance.
I drink a LOT of Jasmine tea so I hoped the Jasmine scent will smell exactly like tea leaves out of my tin can and it did. I was taking whiffs of the jasmine every five minutes; I think I should be bringing this with me to work so I can just inhale this to stay awake. The scent is relaxation in a bottle and would not mind if every spa sprayed Jasmine everywhere. Lavender to me has always been a huge contrast of flavour on whatever I’m eating…ice cream, creme brulee, and macarons. It’s strong, it’s herbal, it is authentic.
Gingerbread has been on this blog before and it’s a spicy, sweet scent that makes me want to sit in front of a campfire with a hot drink. Hawaiian Vanilla reminds me of Starbucks vanilla bean frappuccinos, lightweight and aromatic. Angel Food is a reflection of egg whites, sugar, vanilla and coconut- can’t say no to cake with a foundation of those yummy ingredients!
Demeter showed a blending pyramid to guide you on making your own scent- base notes would include woody, earthy, or vanilla scents. The middle notes would have scents of flowers, rose, spice, or smoke. The top notes that give first impressions would be something citrusy, fruity, or creamy/edible. But it always comes down to what YOU want.
After experimenting with spraying a bunch of scents on my skin and figuring out what kind of combination I like, I dropped a bit of this and a bit of that into my own Demeter bottle. I used Hawaiian Vanilla as my base as it had the lightest scent, plus two drops of Jasmine. Jasmine is definitely my favourite but could be overpowering other scents if too much is used. Then I added a few drops of Gingerbread for a spicy finish.
I feel like I should give it a name related to Harry Potter…Draught of Magic? A Muggle’s Secret?
This was as a fun experience to make something totally customized to my liking and I can imagine this would be a really fun activity with a group of perfume enthusiasts! I also want to point out that Demeter fragrances does not contain any artificial color or Phthalates or parabens, which is great because many high end perfumes does contain phalates!
If you could customize your own scent, what would it be and what would you call it?
