I have to thank Instagram for introducing me to many new dessert places. Richmond just used to have a plethora of Asian food and semi decent food of other cultures and recently there has been an explosion of dessert spots, and I’m not complaining. Bubble waffles are one of my favourite snacks to munch when I’m out and about (so hard to get a hold of them now,) and when I knew there was a place to get over glorified bubble waffles at this placed called The BBT Shop in Richmond…well I must check that out.
The BBT Shop is located under the Superstore Complex on No.3 Rd. They serve a variety of flavoured bubble waffles (such as coconut or matcha) and you can choose your toppings or get a premium bubble waffle. And of course there’s your bubble tea, frappes, and caffeinated drinks- really wish I gave a drink a try, next time fore sure!
My friend and I both got premium bubble waffes. She got the Cookies n’ Cream ($6.95.) It came with cream cheese frosting on the side (just like the cream in Oreo cookies.) This was pretty sugary, as there were cookie chunks in the waffle, on top of the waffle, and then there was whipped cream and cream cheese frosting. Pretty overwhelming eh?
I went for the Strawberries and Cream ($6.75) and I added $2 for vanilla ice cream. First off- that scoop of ice cream was a HUGE portion, I was surprised since I was expecting the size to be a lot smaller than my fist. I chose the Strawberries one to be a bit “healthy” for Vitamin C (yeah I know I’m sort of lying to myself)….and it was delicious. My friend and I decided that this one was a bit better since it was less sweet.
These are kind of the toppings I would go for in a Belgium waffle, so it was interesting to pair it with bubble waffles. I could taste a good amount of strawberry-ness inside each waffle; I wish there was a bit more fluffiness inside the waffle and that it was still warm when it came.
Overall, the presentation of the waffle was great (look how Instagram friendly they are) and everything tasted fresh. Kudos to the little green lettuce or some veggie thing they added to the strawberry waffle, super cute! I would like it more if there was more of that chewy, melting eggy goodness inside it. The premium waffles are a bit pricey as I paid almost $10 with the ice cream, definitely it isn’t a place I’ll stop by every other week. But for a once in a while dessert date? Definitely.
