Any day with The Urban Tea Merchant is a good day; in the beginning of September I visited the tea salon to glimpse and try their new Autumn mooncakes, teas from TWG Tea, and Autumn Celebration Tea Service. If there’s one thing you should know about mooncakes is that they’re dense and filling; I finished the afternoon with an extremely satisfied stomache. Might I add, these were some of the most unique and delicious mooncakes I have tasted.
I brought some of these mooncakes for my mom to try and she was all “GIVE ME MORE”-so heads up if you want to celebrate the Mid-Autumn festival in a unique way, this is definitely the spot.
Before starting the Autumn Celebration Tea Service, I had a little mooncake tasting session of The Urban Tea Merchant’s TWG Tea Traditional Mooncakes. What I love about these is not only the modern twist of these mooncakes, but they aren’t super sweet that I can only take a few bites.
- Constellation: The most signature mooncake as it contains a salted egg yolk; it contains Singapore Breakfast Tea infused brown lotus filling with melon seeds.
- Moonlight: This mooncake is filled with black sesame paste infused with Pu-Erh Prestige Tea with black and white sesame seeds.
- Harvest: This mooncake is a mixed of nuts with Brothers Club Tea infused lotus paste. The various nuts include: almonds, hazelnuts, macadamia, and pecans.
- Fire: (This is my favourite one!) This mooncake contains white lotus and pistachio paste infused with Paris-Singapore Tea. Inside the paste are dried cranberries and red beans.
My favourite two teas paired with the mooncakes are the Singapore Breakfast Tea and the Autumn Celebration Tea. Both black teas that go well along a rich treat such as a mooncake.
The Autumn Celebration Tea Set ($52 CAD pp) is one of my favourite tea services I’ve tried at The Urban Tea Merchant- maybe because I’m Asian, but also because there is a good amount of food and desserts that have the right amount of sweetness. (I talk a lot about how sugary food tastes like now…because I’m getting OLD!)
The tea service includes:
SAVOURIES
- Braised “Ethnic Jewel Tea” Beef Short Rib, Cardamom-scented Rice, Pickled Carrot on Butter Lettuce
- “Imperial Lapsang Souchong”Black Sesame Chicken Cup
- Smoked Salmon Rosette, “Sencha” Wasabi Aioli, Marble Rye
- “Jade of Africa” Slow Cooked Pork Belly with Maple Crème Fraîche
SWEETS
- “Indian Night” Pumpkin Tart with Cinnamon Chantilly
- ”Weekend In Venice” Strawberry Dome, Crème Anglaise, Pistachios
- Almond Half Moon Cookie
- TWG Tea Mooncake
- Mélange of Fresh Fruit
I usually prefer savouries for tea services, but this time the sweets stole it for me. The pumpkin tart was perfect- it had a load of whipped cream with spice in it. The strawberry dome is not only pretty and sparkly on the outside, but it really tastes as good as it looks! And then you got your massive mooncake, prepare to be full with this set!
The Autumn Celebration Tea Service was more than enough food; I love the details that were assembled on the platter- with the moon shaped cookies and star shaped chocolate. I can’t wait to have more mooncakes and tea this month…throw me all the calories!!
