If you love something unique, some Japanese food and spaghetti, I suggest visiting SPAGHeTEi in downtown Vancouver. I’m a huge fan for fusion spaghetti for some reason, they don’t make me feel as full on cheese and such, and it provide a unique culinary experience.
I actually visited twice. The first time I went was for dinner. I ordered the White Sauce spaghetti with baby spinach, shrimp and bacon with their original white sauce. My boyfriend ordered the Mentaiko with Squid, comes with assorted mushrooms and dried seaweed. Mentaiko is fish roe for all you wondering, i was wiki-ing it on the spot when I was in the restaurant.
At that time during dinner, there was a promotion, where you checked in to their restaurant via Twitter or Facebook and you get a free soft drink. My boyfriend LOVES pop, so this was an extra bonus for him and I was happily sipping on my ginger ale and hot water.
Before you get your meal, Spaghetei always gives complimentary garlic bread that is made in house. If you love garlic bread, you will be not disappointed because this one is a flavourful one!
When I have a choice of pasta, I always go for white sauce. I found that Spaghetei’s White Sauce spaghetti isn’t as rich or full of herbs as I liked. I liked the assortment of veggies and meat though, and I was full without finishing it.

I was having fun stealing forkfuls of the Mentaiko with Squid. This is a popular dish at Spaghetei. You might not be able to see it, but there is fish roe in the pasta. I thought it would be have a raw-fishy taste but it didn’t! Also, the pasta was at a different temperature so the seafood was still not fully cooked (purposely.) I think this dish was a good example of fusing Japanese cuisine with spaghetti.

And for dessert, we had creme brulee. One of my favourite desserts, and even though it’s easy to make, I still order it anyway. Wasn’t extraordinary, but still decadent and I was happily scooping the creamy vanilla custard.
The service was great as the waitress came by to to check on our food and they had happy smiles on them.
And since Spaghetei left an impression….we went back several weeks later! After my appointment with 4 Angels Beauty Care, my boyfriend and I went to Spaghetei again. This time, I decided to get something that would be exploding with flavour (hopefully) and I chose the Meat Sauce with Shrimp. There was a good ratio of sauce and spaghetti so that the saltiness of the meat sauce was easily integrated and each forkful had the right taste. There are only three pieces of shrimp (good sized and juicy) so I wish there was maybe a couple more tossed in; but you will have a bit of meat mixed in with this meal. I just love meat sooo…..

My boyfriend ordered the Clam Soup spaghetti. The soup has clam meat, bacon and other vegetables. The only clam related food I ever eat is clam chowder, and this clam soup spaghetti is a creamier, rich version of it with spaghetti in it. It did not have a fishy taste and it sits so nice and warm in your stomache. Perfect for a cold, windy day in Vancouver.

Spaghetei has an extensive menu that I will be back for again. They also have lunch specials on weekdays; however, a full time job prevents me from going there for those deals. The location is close to many popular ramen shops and other Asian cuisine; I’d say Spaghetei founds its niche in downtown Vancouver.
I got so hungry while writing this, I’m going to hunt for a 10pm snack now!
